How Do You Buy A Podcast?

One of the most common questions we get asked here at The Podcast Broker is, “Why would I want to buy a podcast?”

And our answer to that is, “Why wouldn’t you?”

As much as we love podcasting because of the content we get to create, ultimately, they’re a business, and the goal of a business is to make money. It can take years for you to grow your following to the point where you can monetize it, and purchasing a podcast allows you to fast-track that. Or, if you’re trying to grow an audience on a podcast you’ve already created, you can buy a podcast and redirect the RSS feed to your show. And if you’re looking to grow a network, buying podcasts is one of the most efficient ways to do it.

The opportunities that come from purchasing a podcast are endless. So, let’s talk about how to get started.

What are you actually buying?

At first, buying a podcast can seem like an abstract concept. What are you buying since there’s no physical product?

When you buy a podcast, you’ll receive control of the RSS feed, giving you access to modify, delete, or add new episodes. You’ll also gain complete control over all other aspects of the show, like the cover art and description. Finally, since you’ll own the RSS feed, you’ll also have access to all the podcast's subscribers

What steps do I need to take?

Follow the steps outlined below to ensure you have a successful podcast purchase.

Find Your Show

It might seem obvious, but the first step to buying a podcast is determining which podcast (or podcasts) you want to buy. You might have the perfect show in mind, but if you don’t, here are some things to consider:

Genre: A show's genre refers to the content category it falls under. Are you looking to purchase a true crime show, a comedy show, or even a business show?

Size: When we refer to the size of a podcast, we’re referring to the amount of downloads the podcast receives on a monthly basis. Shows with a niche audience tend to have smaller audiences, while more general shows can have very large audiences.
Host: Are you looking for a show where the original host will stay on, or are you planning to replace them?

Identify Your Budget

We’ve seen podcast deals starting from $5,000 and going as high as over $500,000. The price to purchase a podcast can depend on multiple variables, the biggest of which is the size of the show.

For example, a show that receives about 10,000 downloads a month might be priced around the $5,000 range, but a show that receives ten times that will require a larger budget. Determining your budget before starting the buying process is crucial because it might require you to go back to step one and decide on a new show.

The last step to buying a podcast is determining how you’re going to do it.
