Determine The Value of Your Podcast

So you want to sell your podcast - that’s great! The first thing you have to do is determine its value.

Like any other business venture, you have to prove the value of the product you’re selling to buyers. But how do you prove the value of your podcast when it isn’t a physical item?

That’s where we come in. Keep reading to learn the three primary variables to consider when determining your podcast's value.

Downloads

The first question you should ask yourself if you’re considering selling your podcast is, “Does my podcast have an established audience?”

The number of downloads your podcast receives in one month is a major factor in determining its value. It’s important to remember that the reason a buyer is considering purchasing your podcast is because you’ve done something they either can’t or don’t have the time to do themselves. You’ve built a sizable community that tunes into your show weekly and trusts what you have to say.

The larger the number of monthly downloads you get, the more value this adds to your podcast.

Revenue

Right after the number of downloads comes revenue. A big audience is impressive, but if you can’t prove that your show makes money, you can’t sell your podcast.

To determine your revenue, calculate how much money your podcast brings in monthly from sponsorships or ads.

This is also a great opportunity to look at other ways your podcast brings in revenue. When you sell your podcast, you can also negotiate other assets into the sale, like websites or social media.

  • Do you have an accompanying blog or website you want to add to your sale? Determine how much revenue you bring in from website ads.

  • Does your show’s YouTube channel get thousands of views per episode? Determine how much revenue comes from ads on this channel.

  • Do you have an email list you’ve spent years growing? Determine how much revenue this brings in on a monthly basis.

Cost

Creating something special doesn’t come cheap, and there can be a lot of hidden fees in podcasting.

In order to understand the true value of your podcast, you have to understand how much it costs to keep it running. Are you a one-person team, or do you pay an editor every week? How much does your hosting platform cost? What about the hosting platform for your website?

These are all questions you have to ask yourself to determine the true value of your podcast.
